Dry food

Flakes

  • The most common and convenient
  • They dissolve quickly → they cloud the water
  • Suitable for surface/midwater fish
  • Quality varies greatly → good brands: Hikari, JBL, Tetra, New Life Spectrum

Pellets

  • They dissolve more slowly than flakes
  • Best for the bottom and medium/large fish
  • Sinking pellets for corydoras and loricariids
  • Floating pellets for bettas and surface-feeding fish

Tablets (wafers/tabs)

  • For the bottom: corydoras, loricariids, plecos
  • Zucchini/spirulina wafers for bottom-feeding herbivores

Freeze-dried

  • Tubifex, Artemia, Daphnia, Dehydrated Krill
  • Nutrients preserved, with no risk of parasites
  • Disadvantage: They can cause constipation if they are the only part of your diet
  • Soak before feeding to prevent them from expanding in the fish's stomach
