FEEDING IN A MARINE AQUARIUM
Marine fish
- A more varied and complex diet than that of freshwater fish
- In the wild, reef fish eat throughout the day → multiple small meals are best
Seafood:
- Mysis, Artemia, cyclops
- Krill (for large fish)
- Nori seaweed (for tangs/marine herbivores)
- Marine pellets
- Live copepods (for mandarin fish and certain hard-to-keep fish)
Corals
SPS and LPS corals feed on organic matter in the water and through photosynthesis.
Types of coral feeding:
- Zooplankton: Rotifers, copepods, Artemia nauplii (for LPS with large polyps)
- Phytoplankton: Microalgae for filter-feeding corals (gorgonians, sponges)
- Liquid food: Reef Energy (Red Sea), Polyp Lab Reef-Roids, Coral Frenzy
- Powdered/suspension food: BRS Reef Chili, Brightwell Coral Amino
How to Feed Corals:
- Turn off the power for 5–10 minutes
- Apply food directly to the polyps using a pipette or syringe
- Restore circulation
- Unconsumed food increases PO4/NO3 → do not overfeed
