Wallonia (Green Bubble)
Scientific name: Valonia ventricosa, Valonia macrophysa Taxonomic type: Siphoned chlorophyte (bubble algae) Water: Marina Color: Bright green, emerald green, sometimes silvery due to reflection Texture: Spherical or hemispherical bubble, hard, shiny
Appearance: Perfectly spherical or semispherical bubbles, bright green in color, 5–30 mm in diameter. They grow on live rock, either individually or in groups. Very aesthetically pleasing, but invasive.
Is it dangerous?: It is non-toxic, but if the bubble bursts, it releases millions of cells that spread throughout the rock. It is difficult to control once it has burst.
Main causes: Introduction with live rock, moderate nutrient levels.
How to remove it:
- Handling Instructions: Use tweezers to remove the bubble WITHOUT popping it. Place it in a glass of water outside the aquarium and discard it.
- Biological: Hermit crabs (Calcinus spp.), some emerald crabs.
- H₂O₂ Injection: Using a hypodermic syringe, inject directly into the bubble. This kills it without releasing it.
