Gha Marina
Green Seaweed (GHA Marina)
Scientific name: Chaetomorpha linum, Bryopsis pennata, various marine Cladophora species Color: Medium green, bright green Appearance: Green, thread-like strands similar to freshwater GHA, but often thicker and sturdier.
Where is it found?: Live rock, decoration, back of the sump.
Is it dangerous?: Not directly, but it can suffocate corals if it covers them.
Main causes:
- Nitrates (NO₃) > 5–10 ppm
- Phosphates (PO₄) > 0.05–0.1 ppm
- Little movement in areas of the rock
How to remove it:
- Biological: Tang (surgeonfish) — especially Zebrasoma flavescens (yellow tang), Ctenochaetus (kole tang). Foxface (Siganus vulpinus). Emerald crabs (Mithraculus sculptus) for algae in crevices.
- Instructions: Remove manually with your fingers or tweezers.
- Shelter with Chaeto: Cultivate Chaetomorpha (a non-invasive GHA) in the shelter as a nutrient exporter—it competes with invasive algae.
- Skimmer: Optimize the skimmer to remove more organic matter.
- Nitrate and Phosphate Reactor (NP Reducer): Carbon pellets for nutrient reduction.
- Remove with H₂O₂: Use on removable decorations only; do not use inside the aquarium with corals.
